  12. Handcrafted, studio quality software composed exclusively in Modula-2 and 
  13. Assembly.

  15. KW and UKW are companion backup and restore utilities with compression. They 
  16. are infinitely simpler to run than DOS BACKUP/RESTORE or 5th Generation's 
  17. Fastback, and yield a fine ratio of compression/ decompression versus speed in 
  18. most instances. Prompts are event-driven, and windowed. KW/UKW is heavily 
  19. loaded with messages to help users throughout archiving/de-archiving process. 
  20.           
  21. KW and UKW are especially suited to production capacity software dubbing
  22. environments, where quality assurance and speed are of primary consideration.
  23. While the current compression and decompression facilities of KW/UKW are not
  24. as extensive as that of say PKZIP/PKUNZIP of PKWARE, the speed of KW/UKW as it 
  25. relates to the cost of manpower time expended in dubbing archives far 
  26. outweighs the cost of an extra floppy which may be required. KW's compression 
  27. takes place much faster than that of PKZIP!! Also, at the date of this 
  28. writing, as far as I know PKZIP/PKUNZIP (as well as any other shareware 
  29. archiving / compression software) doesn't archive across floppies anyway.

  31. And further, to maintain quality assurance in the speediest fashion, KW will
  32. optionally use a simple verification method to test the integrity of your disk
  33. media, which is faster than Norton's DT and very flexible. If, say, disk three
  34. fails verification, KW asks you if you would like to start over with that
  35. disk, and not start over at the beginning, with disk one.
  36.  
  37. To increase its favorability toward production-to-client environments, KW/UKW 
  38. has various built-in features which make it friendly to any proprietary 
  39. install programs your production environment may use. Those features are as 
  40. follows:

  42. ** Optional immediate operation in UKW. (don't prompt for first disk, just go
  43.    straight to it).
  44. ** Optional switch to turn off copyright info.
  45. ** Optional switch to turn off sound prompts.
  46. ** Option to create command-line entered destination directory in UKW.

  66. All options are entered via the command-line; a help screen is available by 
  67. entering KW/UKW <return>.

  69. To register: You must send me $25.00 US, and I'll send you the latest
  70.              version (KW 1.01 & UKW 1.01 as of 1 May 1991).
  71.              Benefits for registering include a free copy of the next major
  72.              release, as well as having windowing options enabled in 
  73.              your current version. Also, you'll get a willing ear to listen
  74.              to changes you think should be made.

  76.              For you folks in the production environment, for a minimum of

  78.              I will send you a special version with a number of your
  79.              company's own prompts installed. I will determine the
  80.              maximum amount of time, effort, and support that will be
  81.              required to complete the task. All you need to do is let
  82.              me know what you want, and I'll decide if I can produce
  83.              a special copy for you.
  84.              Included with all special copies is information concerning
  85.              locations of total space requirements, total number of files,
  86.              and directory structure of archived files in the main KW
  87.              file on floppy. This info enables your proprietary install
  88.              program to read a KW file directly to get vital archive
  89.              information.

  91. NOTES: 
  92.  
  93. ** To maintain the speediest possible operaton, KW will not attempt to
  94.    compress the following file formats: .ZIP,.ARC,.ZAP,.PAK,.SQZ,.SEC,.LZH.
  95.    It will only store these files.
  96.  
  97. ** At runtime, KW/UKW installs an INT24 handler. This means that you won't get 
  98.    any "abort, retry, ignore" errors from DOS to disrupt the statistics 
  99.    messages KW/UKW is displaying on the screen. More importantly, any INT24 
  100.    errors that do occur are handled by a windowed, user-friendly interface. 
  101.    KW/UKW also installs a run-time error handler. If KW/UKW fails to run for 
  102.    any particular reason, such as hardware problems, a user-readable error 
  103.    will be reported along with an address to the offending area in the 
  104.    program. If any difficulties of this nature are encountered while running 
  105.    KW/UKW, please notify me with the reported address and error.  
  106.  
  107. ** A note about disk verification. 
  108.    To KW verification, even a disk with all bad sectors officially marked as 
  109.    such will be considered completely bad. Experience shows that these disks 
  110.    are potentially cancerous and can still prove to be unreliable. So for an 
  111.    average cost of 70 cents per disk, why take the chance? 
  112.  
  113. !! For starters, try the following: Now that you've unzipped KW.ZIP (the 
  114.    distribution file that this doc. file came in), you should have KW.EXE, 
  115.    UKW.EXE, and this file, KWREAD.ME. To show you KW/UKW's speed and 
  116.    flexibility, first Krunch down the above three files to the same 
  117.    destination you unzipped KW.ZIP with the following command line:

  119.    KW <dest drive> KW.EXE UKW.EXE KWREAD.ME  
  120.  
  121.    Make a note of how fast KW does its job, and compare the resulting file
  122.    size with that of KW.ZIP. In this instance, not much difference. Now unzip
  123.    KW.ZIP again, making a note of the time required. Then UnKrunch your KW 
  124.    file with the following command-line:

  126.    UKW <dest drive>

  128.    In this instance, UKW should take about two/thirds the time PKUNZIP 
  129.    required.
