- KW - KrunchWrite and UKW - UnKrunchWrite (version 1.01)
- World's first shareware backup/restore with compression (I guess)!
-
- Copyright 1991 James K Smith III. All rights reserved.
-
- Coming to you from: James K Smith III 's Really Outrageous Software Studio
- 547 County Road 728
- Montevallo, AL 35115
-
- Handcrafted, studio quality software composed exclusively in Modula-2 and
- Assembly.
-
- KW and UKW are companion backup and restore utilities with compression. They
- are infinitely simpler to run than DOS BACKUP/RESTORE or 5th Generation's
- Fastback, and yield a fine ratio of compression/ decompression versus speed in
- most instances. Prompts are event-driven, and windowed. KW/UKW is heavily
- loaded with messages to help users throughout archiving/de-archiving process.
-
- KW and UKW are especially suited to production capacity software dubbing
- environments, where quality assurance and speed are of primary consideration.
- While the current compression and decompression facilities of KW/UKW are not
- as extensive as that of say PKZIP/PKUNZIP of PKWARE, the speed of KW/UKW as it
- relates to the cost of manpower time expended in dubbing archives far
- outweighs the cost of an extra floppy which may be required. KW's compression
- takes place much faster than that of PKZIP!! Also, at the date of this
- writing, as far as I know PKZIP/PKUNZIP (as well as any other shareware
- archiving / compression software) doesn't archive across floppies anyway.
-
- And further, to maintain quality assurance in the speediest fashion, KW will
- optionally use a simple verification method to test the integrity of your disk
- media, which is faster than Norton's DT and very flexible. If, say, disk three
- fails verification, KW asks you if you would like to start over with that
- disk, and not start over at the beginning, with disk one.
-
- To increase its favorability toward production-to-client environments, KW/UKW
- has various built-in features which make it friendly to any proprietary
- install programs your production environment may use. Those features are as
- follows:
-
- ** Optional immediate operation in UKW. (don't prompt for first disk, just go
- straight to it).
- ** Optional switch to turn off copyright info.
- ** Optional switch to turn off sound prompts.
- ** Option to create command-line entered destination directory in UKW.
-
- *****************************************************************************
- The following options are available when you officially register your copy. *
- ** Optional output to a sub-window (you define xy-coordinates). *
- ** Optional on/off switch of output to screen. *
- *****************************************************************************
-
- Other features include:
- ** Optional disk verification in KW.
- ** Optional directory list of files in archive (w/page breaks if needed) in
- UKW.
-
- Enhancements in the works at the Really Outrageous Software Studio:
- ** Optional Deflate/Inflate yielding "Shrink" level efficiency.
- ** Password Protection.
- ** Two different kinds of verification.
- (<P>aranoid: extra slow, but super reliable)
- (<N>ormal : fast, reliable)
-
- All options are entered via the command-line; a help screen is available by
- entering KW/UKW <return>.
-
- To register: You must send me $25.00 US, and I'll send you the latest
- version (KW 1.01 & UKW 1.01 as of 1 May 1991).
- Benefits for registering include a free copy of the next major
- release, as well as having windowing options enabled in
- your current version. Also, you'll get a willing ear to listen
- to changes you think should be made.
-
- For you folks in the production environment, for a minimum of
- **** $50.00 US ****
- I will send you a special version with a number of your
- company's own prompts installed. I will determine the
- maximum amount of time, effort, and support that will be
- required to complete the task. All you need to do is let
- me know what you want, and I'll decide if I can produce
- a special copy for you.
- Included with all special copies is information concerning
- locations of total space requirements, total number of files,
- and directory structure of archived files in the main KW
- file on floppy. This info enables your proprietary install
- program to read a KW file directly to get vital archive
- information.
-
- NOTES:
-
- ** To maintain the speediest possible operaton, KW will not attempt to
- compress the following file formats: .ZIP,.ARC,.ZAP,.PAK,.SQZ,.SEC,.LZH.
- It will only store these files.
-
- ** At runtime, KW/UKW installs an INT24 handler. This means that you won't get
- any "abort, retry, ignore" errors from DOS to disrupt the statistics
- messages KW/UKW is displaying on the screen. More importantly, any INT24
- errors that do occur are handled by a windowed, user-friendly interface.
- KW/UKW also installs a run-time error handler. If KW/UKW fails to run for
- any particular reason, such as hardware problems, a user-readable error
- will be reported along with an address to the offending area in the
- program. If any difficulties of this nature are encountered while running
- KW/UKW, please notify me with the reported address and error.
-
- ** A note about disk verification.
- To KW verification, even a disk with all bad sectors officially marked as
- such will be considered completely bad. Experience shows that these disks
- are potentially cancerous and can still prove to be unreliable. So for an
- average cost of 70 cents per disk, why take the chance?
-
- !! For starters, try the following: Now that you've unzipped KW.ZIP (the
- distribution file that this doc. file came in), you should have KW.EXE,
- UKW.EXE, and this file, KWREAD.ME. To show you KW/UKW's speed and
- flexibility, first Krunch down the above three files to the same
- destination you unzipped KW.ZIP with the following command line:
-
- KW <dest drive> KW.EXE UKW.EXE KWREAD.ME
-
- Make a note of how fast KW does its job, and compare the resulting file
- size with that of KW.ZIP. In this instance, not much difference. Now unzip
- KW.ZIP again, making a note of the time required. Then UnKrunch your KW
- file with the following command-line:
-
- UKW <dest drive>
-
- In this instance, UKW should take about two/thirds the time PKUNZIP
- required.
